Scholarships & Community Awards – 2020

In response to the challenges we’ve all faced this musical season, please note the following changes to Scholarships and Community Awards:

The following Scholarship and Internships are available for FREDDY Awards participating students.


West Virginia UniversityRecipient – Ms. Hayley Chamberlain – Parkland High School – WVU Theatre & Dance is excited to return to this year’s Freddy© Awards! The award presented will provide a scholarship from WVU and the School of Theatre Dance, which when combined with other awards from West Virginia University, will be the equivalent to the cost of university tuition. The award is renewable over 8 semesters of study. Students interested in enrolling in WVU School of Theatre and Dance in the Fall of 2021 as Musical Theatre or Design & Technology should apply by May 7th for consideration. Muhlenberg CollegeRecipient – Ms. Evelyn Carlin – Notre Dame High School – The Muhlenberg College Scholarship consists of $5,000 Talent Scholarship, renewable for three years, to a theatre and/or dance student attending a high school which participates in the 2020 FREDDY© Awards program who has been accepted by and decides to attend Muhlenberg College. Cedar Crest College – The Cedar Crest College Scholarship consists of $1,500 Annual Scholarship in Dance or Theatre, renewable for three years, to a student attending a school which participates in the 2020 Freddy© Awards program who has been accepted by and decides to attend Cedar Crest College. DeSales University – DeSales University is pleased to offer (4) $5,000 scholarship opportunities (renewable for 3 years for a total of $20,000) to senior Theatre students attending a high school which participates in the 2020 FREDDY© Awards program. Scholarships will only be awarded to students who have applied to DeSales after April 15 and who are academically accepted to DeSales University and artistically accepted into the Theatre program. East Stroudsburg University – The East Stroudsburg University Theatre Department/State Theatre FREDDY© Awards Scholarship consists of TWO $1000/Year Scholarships for ESU’s 2020-2021 academic year. Scholarships will be awarded based on achievements in Musical Theatre Performance and Tech/Stage Management/Design. Click HERE to download the application. Application deadline – May 10, 2020.


Northampton Community CollegeRecipient – Mr. August Gaumer – Parkland High School – State Theatre FREDDY© Awards Scholarship consists of a $1,000/Year Scholarship for NCC’s 2020-2021 academic year. Students applying for the 2020 NCC/Freddy Awards Scholarship DO NOT have to be Theatre Majors BUT they must plan to enroll at NCC for the Fall 2020 semester, and be registered for 6 or more credit hours. The award recipient must notify NCC Scholarships Department when they have registered for Fall 2020 classes. Download the application DOC or PDF. Deadline May 10, 2020.


Civic Theatre Outstanding Student Director Award and InternshipRecipient – Ms. Emily Gilligan – Warren Hills Regional High School – The Civic Theatre Outstanding Student Director Award includes a $500 cash award and Internship that will be awarded to a student director who has an interest in a directing career or avocation and has shown not only aptitude but enthusiasm for the art of directing or choreography. Teachers can nominate student directors and/or choreographers who would be interested in working as assistant director and/or choreographer on a production at Civic Theatre of Allentown. The rehearsal and production time commitment can be as limited or as involved as the student wishes. This award pays a stipend. Click HERE to download the application. Deadline – May 8, 2020.


Pennsylvania Youth Ballet/Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley  – Recipients – Ms. Ashley Westgate – Emmaus High School; Ms. Giovanni Failla – Whitehall High School; Ms. Hannah Kurczeski – Catasaqua High School; Ms. Kaileigh Cagnassola – Warren Hills Regional High School; Ms. Lindsey Swanson – Nazareth Area High School – ALL Dancers from Freddy Participating Schools are eligible for a 3 week FULL scholarship to Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Summer Intensive! Choose any 3 weeks, or single class equivalent, during our summer program (June 22 – July 31) at the Ballet Guild studios in Bethlehem, PA. Dance classes offered include – BALLET, CONDITIONING, TAP! – Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Instructors will choose 8 WINNERS for the summer scholarships! Deadline for submission May 15.

  • Send a 1-2 minute video of you dancing – it can be in your house or from a rehearsal or previous performance – it can be from your musical or any other dance that represents you well.
  • Introduce yourself at the beginning of the video and tell us in a few short sentences why dance is important to you.
  • Include the following information in the email
  • Name, Address, Phone Number
  • High School, Current Grade
  • Name of your Musical, Character Name

In the spirit of supporting all schools in the program, the total of all monetary awards that are normally connected to a FREDDY Award will be shared equally between all participating high school musical programs.  We thank the following generous funding partners for making this possible:
