Scholarships & Community Awards – 2023

The following scholarships and internships are available for students participating in the FREDDY© Awards program.

West Virginia University Theatre & Dance  is excited to participate with this year’s FREDDY© Awards! The award presented will provide a scholarship from WVU and the School of Theatre & Dance, which when combined with other awards from WVU, will be equivalent to the cost of university tuition. The award is renewable over eight semesters of study. Students interested in enrolling in West Virginia University School of Theatre and Dance in the Fall of 2024 as Musical Theatre or Design & Technology majors are encouraged to apply.

Muhlenberg College – The Muhlenberg College Scholarship is a $5,000 Talent Grant Scholarship, renewable for up to four years, to a theatre and/or dance student attending a high school which participates in the 2023 FREDDY© Awards program who has been recommended for a talent grant based upon an audition, has been admitted, and plans to enroll at Muhlenberg College as a full-time student.

East Stroudsburg University Marching Band Scholarship – The East Stroudsburg University Theatre Department is pleased to offer MULTIPLE Marching Band Scholarship opportunities to seniors. Each scholarship consists of a 50% tuition reduction for ESU’s 2023-2024 academic year (can be continued for four years if 30 credits are taken annually).

East Stroudsburg University – The East Stroudsburg University Theatre Department is pleased to offer TWO State Theatre FREDDY© Awards Scholarship opportunities to seniors. Each scholarship consists of a $1,000/year scholarship for ES’s 2023-2024 academic year. Scholarships will be awarded based on achievements in Musical Theatre Performance and Tech/Stage Management/Design.

DeSales University – DeSales University is pleased to offer (4) $2,500 scholarship opportunities (renewable for 3 years for a total of $10,000) to Senior Theatre Students attending a high school which participates in the 2023 FREDDY© Awards program. Scholarships will only be awarded to students who have applied to DeSales after April 1, 2023, and who are academically accepted to DeSales University and artistically accepted into the Theatre Program.

Air Products Education & Community Impact Award – Air Products is offering a $1,500 cash award to the theatre department of the school that best connects its musical production to other areas of academic study and/or a community project or event.

LehighValleyLive.com & The Express-Times Student Achievement Award – As sponsors of the 2023 FREDDY© Awards, LehighValleyLive.com & The Express-Times will offer a $1,500 scholarship to the recipient of the 2023 Student Achievement Award, which is announced at the FREDDY© Awards Ceremony. This is a self-nominating scholarship and is available to students who participate in their school’s musical theatre program in a backstage capacity, such as a stage manager, stage crew, scenic design, student/assistant directors, and choreographers. Student nominees must complete the 2023 Student Achievement Award Self-Nomination Form. The nomination must be accompanied by the Teacher Recommendation Form.

Pennsylvania Youth Ballet / Ballet Guild of the Lehigh Valley – Three-week scholarships to the Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Summer Dance Intensive are available to all nominees for the 2023 FREDDY© Award for Outstanding Performance by a Featured Dancer. Nominees may choose three weeks out of the six-week program that best fits their schedule. Nominees will receive a certificate after nominations are announced with further details.


Mowad Turf Specialists, LLC – $1,000 in cash awards: $500 cash award to the recipient of the 2023 FREDDY© for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role. $500 cash award to the recipient of the 2023 FREDDY© for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role.


R. Richard Knauss Foundation – $1,000 in cash awards: $500 cash award to school that is awarded the 2023 FREDDY© for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical. $500 cash award to the school that is awarded the 2023 FREDDY© for Outstanding Overall Production by a Smaller School.


Civic Theatre – The Civic Theatre Outstanding Student Director Award will be given to a student director who has an interest in a directing career or avocation and has shown not only great aptitude, but enthusiasm for the art of directing and/or choreographing. Teachers can nominate student directors and/or choreographers. If interested, and available, the recipient may also work as an assistant director and/or choreographer on a production at Civic Theatre of Allentown. This award includes a $500 honorarium.
