Scholarships & Community Awards – 2024

Please note: All scholarships are offered from individual institutions specifically to students enrolled in a FREDDY© Awards participating high school. Applying for any of these scholarships does not require university/college commitment.


Cedar Crest College – for juniors and late-committing seniors

Cedar Crest College is pleased to offer one $1,500 Scholarship in Dance or Theatre (renewable for three years) to a junior or senior student attending a school that participates in the 2024 FREDDY© Awards Program. The scholarship will be awarded to students who have applied to Cedar Crest College after March 1, 2024, and who have been both academically accepted to Cedar Crest College and involved onstage or backstage at their high school. For more information, please contact Roxanne Amico at rtamico@cedarcrest.edu A letter of recommendation from their high school drama teacher must be submitted for consideration by May 13, 2024.


Civic Theatre of Allentown

The Civic Theatre Outstanding Student Director/Choreographer Award and Internship will be awarded to a student director or choreographer who has an interest in a directing career or avocation and has shown not only aptitude but enthusiasm for the art of directing or choreographing. If interested, and available, the recipient may also work as an assistant director and/or choreographer on a production at Civic Theatre of Allentown. This award includes a $500 honorarium.

While this is a self-nominating award, your application must be accompanied by a letter from your teacher/director answering the question “Why should this student be awarded the Directing/Choreography Internship?”

DeSales University – for late-committing seniors

DeSales University is pleased to offer (4) $2,500 scholarship opportunities (renewable for 3 years for a total of $10,000) to senior theatre students attending a high school which participates in the 2024 FREDDY© Awards Program. Scholarships will only be awarded to students who have applied to DeSales after April 1, 2024, and who have been both academically accepted to DeSales University and artistically accepted in the Theatre program. 2024 East Stroudsburg University Scholarship

Recipients must have demonstrated a commitment to the theatre program at ESU along with clearly indicating the intention of pursuing a career in theatre professionally and/or academically. Recipients must be enrolled full time and must participate (or apply to participate) in at least one theatre mainstage per semester. Applicants must submit a 250-500 word cover letter explaining their connection and commitment to the performing arts. Due by May 13, 2024.

lehighvalleylive.com and The Express-Times, sponsors of the 2024 FREDDY© Awards, will offer a $1,500 scholarship to the recipient of the 2024 Student Achievement Award, which is announced at the FREDDY© Awards Ceremony.

This scholarship is available to students who fill out the application below and participate in their school’s musical theater program in a backstage capacity, such as a stage manager, stage crew, scenic design, student/assistant directors and choreographers.

Northampton Community College In Memory of Bill Mutimer – for seniors

Northampton Community College is pleased to offer a $1,000 scholarship, renewable for a second year, to students attending a high school which participates in the 2024 FREDDY© Awards Program. Students applying DO NOT have to be theatre majors, BUT they must plan to enroll at NCC for the Fall 2024 semester and be registered for 6 or more credit hours. The award recipient must notify the NCC Scholarships Department when they have registered for Fall 2024 classes.

Directing Observership at Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, May 27 – June 14

Learn firsthand from Artistic Director Jason King Jones as he directs the musical The Last Five Years. Gain insights into the overall process of mounting a musical at a professional equity theatre. West Virginia University – for Juniors and gap-year seniors, Provisional Scholarship

West Virginia University Theatre and Dance is excited to participate in this year’s FREDDY© Awards and offer FREDDY© students the first scholarship opportunity for the 2025 school year at WVU’s School of Theatre and Dance. Please be aware, a minimum number of students must apply for this scholarship for it to be offered.

The award presented will provide a scholarship, which when combined with other awards from WVU, will be equivalent to the cost of university tuition. The award is renewable over eight semesters of study. Students interested in enrolling in West Virginia University in the Fall of 2025 as Musical Theatre OR Design and Technology Majors are encouraged to apply.

FREDDY Nomination/Recipient Based Awards and Scholarships

Air Products Education and Community Impact Award

The Air Products Education and Community Impact FREDDY© Award is given to a school that creatively connects its musical production within the classroom or within the community. Thanks to a generous donation from the Air Products Foundation, the school that is awarded the Education and Community Impact FREDDY© Award will also receive a $1,500 grant to be directed to the school’s musical theater program.

Award must be applied for by an adult production director or technical director. Applications must be received by 4:00PM on Sunday, April 28th, 2024:

PA Youth Ballet

Three-week full scholarship to Pennsylvania Youth Ballet Summer Intensive! Choose any 3 weeks, or single class equivalent, during our summer program to the Ballet Guild studios in Bethlehem, PA. Dance classes offered include – Ballet, Conditioning, Tap, and Musical Theatre! Scholarships are available to all nominees for the FREDDY© Award for Outstanding Performance by a Featured Dancer. Nominees may choose three weeks out of the six-week program that best fits their schedule. Nominees will receive a certificate after nominations are announced with further details on how to redeem their scholarship.
